A message from the Green Team

Fancy taking part in a competition?

Before we all started working from our homes, the Totley Green Team was formed. We only got the chance to meet once, but it was clear how clued up everybody was on environmental issues and how motivated you all were to make positive changes for a better future. One of the suggestions in our first meetings was that we encourage a wider range of bird species to our school grounds.

With this in mind, now could be a perfect opportunity to create some nest boxes, bird tables and bird feeders at home for a new school bird sanctuary ready for when we return. Recycled materials can be used to make many of the objects, for example bird feeders from plastic bottles or nest boxes from old planks of wood. You could document the design and create process with photographs and some written explanations. I would love to enter your creations for the Better Energy School Awards 2020. There is a chance we could win £5000 to help improve our school which would really help us create a proper vegetable patch amongst other things. Please email any of your fantastic creations to lellis@totley.sheffield.sch.uk before Thursday 30th April so I can get these in before the deadline.

You could also enter the competition with a piece of artwork. Now is a perfect time to look carefully at nature and the environment around you and celebrate how beautiful it really is. I would like you to create a piece of artwork, possibly using natural materials, but you don’t have to. I am going to put all the artwork together under ‘Nature is Beautiful’ and create a mural to display in school once we are back. Again, please email any of your fantastic creations to lellis@totley.sheffield.sch.uk before Thursday 30th April. You might want to complete entries for both, or neither, it is entirely up to you. I look forward to seeing some fantastic work!

On another note, I’ve also found some really super family home learning packs based on environmental issues specifically designed for the Covid 19 Lockdown. There are loads of fun activities to try together if you fancy trying something a bit different. I highly recommend taking a look. They upload a new home learning pack every Friday.

Take care everybody and have fun!
