Music

Music is a subject which is highly valued and very important to us. Each week, children access music lessons to learn how to listen, sing, perform and compose in a carefully sequenced curriculum which reflects the richness of what it is to be a musician.

The elements of music are used as important tools to explore the music children listen to, the songs they sing and the instruments they learn to play. The elements are sequenced so that children build their understanding progressively and always applied to an authentic purpose.

Practice and performance are important parts of being a musician. Children practise their skills over time in order to alter long term memory and build confidence as musicians. Performance opportunities are regular and purposeful. Children perform for their peers in fortnightly celebration assemblies and for a much larger audience in our annual music festival.

Children start their journey as musicians through song and, tuned and untune percussion. In Year 1 children start to learn about pitch in more depth and use tuned percussion to compose and perform. By the end of KS1, children can play pieces on the glockenspiel. Children learn to play the clarinet and keyboard across Key Stage 2 and leave us as confident and increasingly proficient performers.

Children learn to sing the songs identified in the Department for Education Model music Curriculum and listen to a wide range of pieces of music. Children learn to describe and appraise the pieces they listen to in such a way as to identify how the elements of music have been used to create the intended effect.

Some expert teaching is used across school through the Sheffield Music Hub. Dawn, a woodwind specialist, teachers children in Years 4 and 5 how to play the clarinet, Charlotte teaches singing to children in Years 1, 2 and 3, and Marie teaches keyboards to Year 6 (as well as running a popular keyboard lunchtime club).
