Food for Life Bronze Award for Totley!

We are very proud to announce that we have been awarded Food for Life's Bronze School Award in recognition of the work we are doing around healthy eating at Totley.

Food for Life awards are centred around four areas of development:

  • Food Quality
  • Food Leadership and Food Culture
  • Food Education
  • Community and Partnerships

To have gained the Bronze award, we needed to show that

  • Meet Bronze Food for Life Served Here Award standards which shows that school food is healthy and uses seasonal ingredients that are at least 75% freshly prepared
  • Involve pupils and parents in planning improvements to school menus and the lunchtime experience, boosting school meal take-up
  • Give every pupil the opportunity to visit a local farm, and take part in cooking and food growing activity

The work that went into achieving this award has been a real team effort across the school. However, Mr Beard and Miss Ellis have been particularly instrumental with their work in teaching cookery classes and running the Green Team.

A lot of collaboration with Taylor Shaw (our on-site catering team) has been necessary, and we are really happy with how the team are ensuring the meals are healthy and nutritious, with around 70-80% of our pupils having school dinners! At parents' evenings, the catering team have been providing samples of the food for our parents to try. All of this collaborative work has contributed to our successful completion of this award.

The Green Team have been beavering away at improving food growing spaces, building up raised beds and planting lots of veggies including potatoes, peas, onions, rhubarb, and much more!

They have also been building bird feeders and bug hotels. All of this improves the ecosystem at the school and will help our food grow successfully at school.

Well done to everyone involved.
